Description
Parashat Bo (Exodus 10:1-13:16) opens with the LORD’s command to Moses: “Come to Pharaoh.” Oddly, although this became the name giver of the parasha, it is not the first occurrence of this phrase in the Torah.
This query is created to determine where in the Tenach the imperative bōʾ (בֹּא, “go/come”) in conjunction with the preposition אֶל is used to form an instruction/command.
I add the phrase function (although strictly speaking not required).
The results can be grouped into three types of usage:
Interpersonal approach (mostly authoritative speech): Exodus 7:26; 9:1; 10:1 (all in connection with Pharaoh with identical construction); Jeremiah 41:6; Isaiah 22:15; Ezekiel 3:4, 3:11. Here “בֹּא אֶל” effectively means “present yourself to/enter the presence of.”
Idiomatic “go in to” (sexual): Genesis 38:8.
Entry into a certain place: Ezekiel 10:2.
